- Acknowledge the person who died by using his/her name or talk about them
- Tell the story over and over again
- Express themselves using tools such as writing, drawing,
- Need a safe place outside of the classroom when overwhelmed by feelings
- Have affirmation that the teacher cares for them.
Classroom Strategies:
- Reach out to the student in order to lay the groundwork for communication
- Allow the student to periodically leave the classroom if necessary to contact home or visit school counselors
- Give consideration for missed or incomplete homework.
- Be flexible in accommodating the adjustments to the student's workload and assignments
- Assign a classmate to assist them with school work
- Allow some private time each day
- Be alert for distress
- Know your available referral sources
- Provide structure, support, and care for the student.
- Be willing to step back when you hit the limits of what you can do
Communication with parents or guardians:
- Keep communication open about how child is doing in school and at home; face to face if possible or by phone at a minimum
- Explain it is a good idea to meet to work together, offer support during this difficult time
- Make it clear that your interest is in both the child’s academic performance , social and emotional health
- Let the parents know that they are helping
- Know that in most cases parents greatly appreciate the concern and help
